"I am about a 6-8 month player somewhat progressing along.I currently use a lower level fender strat. it\'s a bit cumbersome only being 1 5/8 nut.being that I have meaty fingers. I was looking at a Davidson it has a 1.75 nut Trying to keep it around 2-3 hundred. is this a piece of crap or is it ok for a first year player. it looks like a knockoff les paul."
I got this in ask a guitarist today. Anyone want to take a stab at it?

Before buying a new guitar, I would consider trying a heavier gauge of strings. Going from 9s to 10s could help maybe? (or even 11's later when he's used to 10's)
Otherwise try to see if you like the feel of the other guitars and see which one you,re confortable. Dont be shy to try some others that aren't in your price range, that can help you big time.
BTW Joel I never played or seen any davidson guitars so I cant tell about their quality. And I never had any problem adjusting my hands on any fretboard either classical, acccoustic or electric... so maybe I can't relate.

SUP? I would say in that price range, bang for bucks,,,point him to an Agile, But it seems for sixers,,only the explorer is 1 3/4 and it is 329.00 www.rondomusic.com/ghostbk.htmlunless he might be interested in one of their jazz models If he isn't set on a Les paul shape,,, Maybe some thing like this Douglas neck thru super strat for 200,, it has 1 3/4 at the nut. www.rondomusic.com/WRK590na.htmlMOSHON DAVE

I never really got into cheaper gear but aren't low cost ibbys and washburns kinda worth it for the cost? Other than that my recommendations to every new player is to deal with the gear they have and try to save money up and buy something in 400-700$ range or even go to 1k, in that range there are a lot of great axes and you have a lot of choice.
So I'd say what Stef said, and after that go for a, say, 700$ ibby or LTD or even a schechter. I think that people who get stuck in having tons of 200-300$ guitars just will not progress... Try to adapt to what you have if you are a beginner and after that when you have tried a lot of different guitars make your choice and get something more serious.

Ah... good old Kev with his love for the kahler...
TBH I dont know jack shit about nut size, it doesnt give me any idea of whats the difference in feel.
Hell... 25.5 or 24.75 scale feels the same for me, I can play as good/bad. Fret size however...
