Yeah, but heck, I would never like to be as big as EVH... I would be content to play with people who share my taste for music in some shitty club here in Iceland. But I'd still like to be good at playing my balalaikas I don't somewhy believe in Talent... It's very hard to explain. There maybe is something inside you that should help you to be good at something, but its the hard work that does the trick :S And the lack of this "talent" shouldn't prevent you from becoming good at something.. I hope so at least.

in my few years of pickin on the geetar, i've come to realize that while practice is what pays off in the end, there is also a natural-born factor involved in music - some people have it and others don't. yes, it is a huge load of BS for somebody to say "man listen to that...so much talent" when listening to some dos music because the truth is that it is the practice that makes you able to channel that raw musical ability into music.
i remember in my first couple years of playing, i surpassed one of my friends in high school who'd been taking lessons for 5 years, and after 2 of just playing along with CDs (i never learned a scale and used it in my playing until last year, and i've been playing for about 6...) and i was already rivaling him. there is a natural component, but people who say that that's all it takes are full of it.

I was a "natural." At least, when it came to punk rock and pop-punk. The first song I ever wrote, way back when I first learned a power chord (seems like forever ago), completely blew my punker guitar playing friends out of the water. I had a strong sense for melody and progressions, and a distinct punkish chug going on, and nobody could touch it. Then I started to broaden my horizons with metal, shred, blues, classical. And I realized, "Wow, I can't do SHIT." I still maintain a large amount of my punky roots, but it's taken a LOT of practice to even be able to play the most basic of solos, let alone black metal riffs (at which I still suck tremendous amounts of ass) or neoclassical leads. EVH is a true natural. LVB was a true natural. RR was a true natural. But they are so few and so far between that all most of us can do is work our asses off, and hope we can pull it off.

to quote EVH - "forget the rules; if it sounds good, then it's good"

to quote EVH - "forget the rules; if it sounds good, then it's good" hell yeah... that's why I love that dude... his playing is so fucking out of the box but same time it's friggin cool and rock'n'roll talent is very evident... I could train my fucking ass off... but I still can't run 100m under 10 seconds... I don't have the talent to be a sprinter... but I have the talent to be a decent mid distance runner. I can study math until I puke... I still would suck at it... I don't have the "gift" to do well in math... but I can be a fucking great in molecular biology some folks can study guitar playing for decades... practice 12 hours per day... have the best teachers in the world... etc. a lot of them still suck ass some folks can pick up any instrument and sound good on it instantly and in music there are different level's of talent I was born with great ear, rhythm sense and songwriting skills... but I can't never be some hyper precice virtuoso-monster like Al DiMeola or John McLaughlin Some have the gift when it comes to speed but don't have good ears and couldn't play in tune to save their lives. Some are truly masterful at their instrument... can do everything but blow at songwriting

Heh, I know what you mean, Endrik. I'm one of those who've practiced for a while and still blow technically, but I've got decent ears and theory and riff-writing skills. And I know someone who's got a gift for speed but can't hear to save his life, but that's another story. But then again, if you have ears you can always write the fast stuff and get someone else to play it for you!

But then again, if you have ears you can always write the fast stuff and get someone else to play it for you! like becker - he can't play himself so he writes music and then plays it vicariously through others \m/
