Alright all of these are played really fast on records, BUT you should start playing them slow. Practice an example (or a small section of it)
a bit without metronome, so your fingers will remember the pattern(s). After that try to push some speed out of your fingers, and then take the metronome and practice very accurately, begin at very slow tempo and increase in 1 bpms, to begin with at least. Also since you asked, some of these shapes will be accompanied by other techniques, like alternate picking.
These examples are tabbed out for a guitar with each string tuned down 1 step. But you can just play them as it is, doesnt really matter unless youare going to play it along the record
Wintersun - Winter madness
Some alt picking in the end...
More Winter Madness
Shapezilla, bars number 8 and 9 are played legato, with highest notes tapped.
Children of Bodom - Downfall
Take care of position shifts in this one, and try to keep timing even.
Children of Bodom - Kissing the Shadows
Sounds very funky if some speed is applied
Wintersun - Beyond the Dark Sun
Diminished shapes in this one can give you some hell in the beginning, but give it some time and they will feel very natural. The proper picking of this diminished shape is from Joel's masterclass on sweep picking.
Extract from Bach's Toccata and Fugue in Dminor ;D
Nightwish - Sacrament of Wilderness
Not a very common way of picking sweeps, still if you can get it up to some speed it will sound pretty cool. Couldnt be bothered with rearranging the alt picking run in the end
Wintersun - Beautiful Death
A long, weird and boring sweep to practice, its much better to practice it in small sections. Sounds extremely nice on record at full speed
Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll
Have some fun tapping
Children of Bodom - Towards Dead End
Melodic shit
And again Bodom - Deadnight Warrior
More melodic shit
Have fun, and check out Joel's masterclass on sweeping or post here if you have any questions!
