I am absolutely retarded when it comes to galloping and argh! I am doing the intro to Holy Wars and i can play it decently with very thin picks, but whenever i use my normal thickness i always have to practice it for about 20 minutes and then i fuck up when i switch from the a to the low e string. Am I hopeless?
PS. I have tried slowing it down very much so and building up and it's not helping too much. I thought it might be my string tension or thickness but I think that my just be an excuse for my sucking (I've got 11's in E flat btw).

You're not hopeless. Just keep practicing. I don't care who you are or what you play: if you want the skill badly enough, you'll acheive it.
Make exercises for yourself that isolate the specific difficulties you're having, then woodshed them like a motherfucker! Work on the particular string cross that's screwing you up. And find some other songs/riffs that also use gallop rhythms and practice those, too.
For speed, try using a metronome. Find the highest tempo you can play the riff flawlessly (that is not to say effortlessly; just no mistakes), and don't speed it up until the riff becomes EASY at a given tempo.

practice SLOW. SLOW. SLOW. like instead of doing goups of 16-16-8th, do 8-8-4th, at like 100. then go up to 220 (still in 8ths !!) then restart from 100 in double feel.
Dont forget to start RIDICULIOUSLY slow, and focus on TIGHTNESS. I know quite a few people who can thrashpick fast, but you dont "feel" that its really thrashpicking..

Sounds like your strings are too thick? Try a 1.0mm pick. It is stiff enough to shred but small enough to kick ass on rhythm and smack that string around.
Having trouble with thrashing, work on your downpicking. Seriously! Downpick like a beast and then it is like adding a small up pick in between. I have a student who has a nightmare thrashing. he always tenses up. Make sure you aren't. Practice the hell out of it at slow speed with perfect technique. See it it helps.

Actually I have been turned from 1.0 mm to a red small jazz 3 pick. I now totally adore them, so much precise. And you dont waggle your hand a lot like with a 1.0 mm you can just make very small movements. I think its all about that sharp edge on the end of the pick.

They're nice and stiff, which makes super fast alternate and sweep picking much easier.

Yeah I have played with the bigger black one for a week or two, really liked it. But one day, it fell under the sofa and still resides there. Fuck, i AM lazy.

On the contrary string size is most times inapplicable my joel friend. I hate galloping on thin strings. No beef, harder to control. The biggest problem people have is that they try galloping WAY too fast for their current skill level. So dude. Think of a horse. make it sound like a trotting horse, and work your way up to getting that bitch into high gear. Keep the picking even as not to trem pick!
