I've gotten over my 7-string covetousness. Six strings are plenty for sounding heavy -- go listen to Edguy's "The Pharoah" and you'll see what I mean.

if you want that low B then you can also downtune 5 steps...
But I was wondering, if you have an 8 stringed guitar, like those new ESPs, will that lowest string (whatever they tune it to, G or Gflat) sound articulate or will it be just noise? I guess it will sound like complete shit since guitar amps are not designed to handle those low frequences with definition...

Yeah, it's just not worth it. If you keep the bass high enough in the mix, you can just use a good EQ to sculpt your guitar sound to get rid of the fuzziness, and you'll sound fine, I think.
