Music theory is the bane of ruts. Music theory is a great way to rape your creativity. Hmm or maybe not for everybody. Some people get soaked in writing stuff that sounds very strange but has a theoretical explanation. For me it is the way it sounds that really matters, when I am fiddling around I am never thinking about "yes, so this is c harm minor and that be root and this be that". I dont really have anything against theory but this here is a great excuse for me not to learn it Composing songs (and I mean songs not just 3 riffs put loosely together) is one way to get out of a rut. If you try to compose a song for a long time and it is not going anywhere, learn others' songs, and try to figure out how they put songs together. Also try writing riffs with different scales and try to put them together. Or learn a different kind of music

It's funny how all the people that bitch about music theory inhibiting your creativity…
don't know anything about tonal harmony.
Also, fucked with a knife.

You'll have to tell me if it works meanwhile heres another fun one to rip on at high tempo (I wrote the time signatures this way because the tab looks cuter when the notes arent spread out, don't hate) Also excuse my big block of white, while I think its sexy, most ppl would disagree.

FINALLY. Been looking for this thread all night. I mostly do it all legato, but picking is acceptable.
