Holy shit, long time, no post! Whuddup, guys? Assuming you even remember me. ;D
So, a while back I injured my fret hand. Tendonitis in my pinky and ring finger. If I play for, say, twenty minutes, I'm in extreme pain for the rest of the day. I know playing isn't doing my hand any good right now, and my chops have gone to absolute shit.
The thing is, I'm unwilling to give up just yet--I fucking love guitar. I know I can't keep playing right-handed, so my plan is to sell my Ibanez, and begin the process of relearning to play, this time left-handed, so I can get back to creating and teaching.
So the question is, anyone know some good left-handed guitars? I haven't looked into it yet at all; was curious to get some outside input first. In general, I'm a fan of Ibanez, Jackson, ESP--you know, super Strat styles. I loather Fender, Gibson, and Yamaha.

Get some physical therapy. Take like three months off. You don't need to switch hands. I say this from bitter, bitter experience and a three-year (and counting) battle with this shit. Take several months off RIGHT NOW and make sure you stretch and do VERY light strength exercises (less than a pound of weight) with that wrist every day. Go see a physical therapist if at all possible. DO IT.

Manly hug hahaha. Sall good.
I can still play, but not at my former level. I spose thats what gets me all cranky about it. Pretty much all I do now is go back over scales and play 'em slower than I normally would. Tricking myself into thinking I can get my speed back ;D
Learning to play left handed isnt impossible. I respect ya for considering it. Like notso' said. Therapy either through a therapist (overpriced and tedious) or just going slower than normal will help. Ive had to relearn twice myself and it does come back....eventually.
Keep faith.

Nah, dude, therapy, while expensive, is worth every penny (I've got insurance, though, so that's a different story). If you CAN do it, do it. If you can't, there's other ways.

Keep at it man. All of that slowing down will just make you better when you get it back. Also, consider supplementing speed with wackier licks/riffs. Use this time to really nail out a style of your own, work on everything else that's eluded you so far. Study some rock guitar solo's (the good ones). While Jimmy paige might not be the fastest guy around, that guy's phrasing is to die for. Make playing slow your bitch. You'll never loose it, and you will definitely learn some new things about music. I know not being able to shred like you could seems a little depressing now, but shredding/guitar solos aren't very important. Get fucking awesome at composing music that's blows the mind, learn to play classical guitar on an electric, get comfy with chord charts and learn some zany jazz standards. Just because it's fast doesn't mean it''s good. While I respect MAB, I'd rather listen to Hendrix period. Don't cry about what you can't do anymore, this is a chance to grow as a guitar player. I wish you shit-tons of luck in getting back your hands all the same man. Keep at it, don't ever give up, and never put down a guitar without knowing you'll pick it up again. Word.... to your mother.
