is a masterclass / column for complex riff playing techniques, like e.g. a riff with lots of open strings that need to be muted and how this muting should be done.

Yes I put it on the fretboard on fret 1 and keep it on the head when I'm not using it.

KK I did something like this, I used 2 thin hair holders (teygjur ) right next to the nut and heavily palm muted the open strings, still they continued ringing out (sounds a bit sloppy recorded). But now I am looking at an uncheating way of doing this, and want some basic exercises to start developing the left hand muting technique

Rusty Cooley is right on the money with this. You use the first finger of your left hand to mute all the higher (in pitch) strings than the one you are currently playing, and your right hand to mute all the lower ones. Simple, easy, fun. Step 3: Profit!

Well.. that's about it.. just use the free fingers to mute what you don't want to ring. Doesn't matter if it's your left or right hand, if it's free it can be muting.
I tend to use the lower part of my fingers (the part where the fingers join the hands) to mute with my fretting hand in riffs.
For arpeggios and shit I use my right hand palm/thumb to mute it at the bridge. Also always when I'm picking my thumb brushes into the nearby strings, muting them and keeping them down. I also like to rest the right hand fingers I'm not using on strings that I'm not using (for example 2st finger on G-string, 3rd on B-string and pinky on the [high]e-string).
The wrist band I only use for 8 finger tapping, there's simply no way of muting when your using all the fingers :S
