Lately Ive been trying to develop my rhythm technique, but i have been having trouble with my picking hand technique. When I play leads/faster single string runs, i tend to play with my hand enclosed similer to a fist.
I was wondering If i should be using the same technique to play rhythm (palm muting, downstrokes a la Iced Earth, Megadeth, Metallica, etc.) If you guys have any advice id really appreciate it. thanks.

I used to play lead with a closed hand. Then I realized that it FELT WRONG. I said something along the lines of "fuck this in the nose with a sledgehammer" and went to using an open hand. But I have always played rhythm with an open hand. It helps me keep the high e and b from ringing (I have smallish hands, for a metalhead ) and just feels more natural.

Generally its best to play with whats comfortable for you, but have a look at how other guitarists play... pick a couple of your favourite players and give their technique a go. In order to really judge if one way is better than another you'll need to stick with it for at least a couple of weeks.... trying a new position for 10 or 15 minutes wont really give you any ideas as to wheter it will work for you.
