so my 5 and 3 string sweeps have been coming along nicely and all i have to do is get them smoothed out and get my fretting hand under control. so, i decided to muffle the strings with a sleeve i cut off a shirt recently and i'm practicing arpeggio shapes a la legato. any opinions/advice?

Learn Yngwie's Black Star. What you're doing -- playing 'em legato style -- seems like the best idea (to me) since you said the difficulty is in the left hand. (The first electric guitars in Black Star also feature a legato sweeping passage.) You could also add some taps to the sweeps or work on sweeped sequences. The only other advice I have is the usual exaggerate the motions and/or practice at varying speeds.

I have trouble doing anything but really fast and short sweeps. I can't keep it going at a note audible speed at all.
