First of all I'd like to say Hi to everyone! Very informative site, and great forum.
Here's my problem, in a nutshell: I find it much more difficult to alternate pick on the lowest string, than all the others. Although part of it could be the thickness of the string, it can't be the main reason - I used to have a 7-string, and I didn't have that problem on the low E string, but I did on the low B string. It's got to do with the fact that there's less to lean my palm on for support. In fact, if I just lay my wrist on the body of the guitar, it becomes much easier, but I'm not sure if it's a good habit, as it makes switching strings more difficult. Also, the problem is more pronounced on guitars that have the bridge high of the body - it seems easier on my strat, for example.
So, anyway - I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem, and what can I do to fix it.

Welcome to the forum! Many players say that using your pinky or pinky and ring fingers to anchor your hand is the best solution. When I play alt pick on E on my guitar with a brigde humbucker, I tend to anchor my hand with my pinky on the lower part of the pickup holder and the body below the pickup. My palm also leans agains the bridge, but very lightly.
Try leaning your hand against the bridge and using your pinky finger for extra support.
Also, what I did when I was unsure of the positioning of the pick hand, was to check out demonstration videos of players whose technique i admired, and try to copy their positions.

Do what Torkin said and you'll be fine I think probably everybody here has gone trough the same problem, I for one have at least and it's just harder to pick that lower string cuz you can't put your palm down when striking it.

That's very reasuring! It seems like I found a good way to do it actually. I guess now I just need to work on it untill it becomes second nature (the hand position and the specific motion)... on and on and on and on and on... ;D

I had the same prob a while back. I had some nerve damage in my fret hand and relearning/retraining my left hand led to picking problems....Ill tell ya. It sucked. I had to take another year to get the timing down pat and it was driving me nuts. I to anchor my pinky. The low E is what gave me fits (.9). Honestly....practice is about the only thing that will clear it up and make it tight. I have Joel to thank for motivating me to jump this hurdle.
