So I've got this crappy-ass little old Jackson. I figure I may as well try to make her my first "make a shit guitar decent project." I need to start with the neck, which, while comfortable, has crappy low frets and whatnot. Also, the tuners suck/don't work at all, albeit that's an easy fix. I've been looking at Warmoth necks for this. Only problem is that while the /width/ of the heel seems to be right, the neck pocket seems to be a bit too deep on the body I have: 3/4" instead of 5/8". How much of a problem willl this present? Doing any routing would be a pain in the arse. And while I'm at it, how much of a pain will replacing a licensed Floyd Rose with an original be?

Youll need too add an 1/8th inch shim under the neck to maintain proper height.....but theres no law against using a 3/16ths to give you better lower fret action (better used with an older neck with a slight foreward bow). Dont overtighten the neck screws... EVER!!! You may have to test fit several times before its set the way you like it.
The Original floyd is smaller than most Licensed versions and the post seperation dimentions are slightly diferent. Its not a direct drop in. I WISH IT WAS TOO. They also have diferent trem cavity dimentions.
Hope I helped bud.

Fack, that sucks about the Floyd. Thanks, though. Looks like I may be able to sell this guitar to a prospective student once I replace the tuners, though. That'd be nice. Just in time, since I'm fucking sick of guitar. Never going to be great, so why bother? And yeah, you did help. Thanks a lot.

I'm looking at this guitar. I'm thinking, "hey, I could replace the tuners, and even replace the no-name floating bridge with a Schaller, which would just be a drop-in installation." Now, my question is this: would it be fucking worth it? What is even the difference between a licensed Floyd Rose and an original -- that is to say, /why/ would one hold tune better than another?

Tungus:
IMO....unless you want to learn more about guitar construction, or you love this axe.....save up for a better instrument. Theres so many variables in which companies construct thier guitars... its sickening.
Floyd Rose invented an awesome product. Bad thing is, he sold his name. Most LICENCED versions differ in small degrees, but make retrofits impossible without some modifications.
The big thing is post width dimentions. If they arent the same... youll have to plug he original holes and drill new ones for the new inserts. The other is the trem routing in the body. It sometimes needs to be "opened up" for the new one to fit and work properly.
I myself prefer the original floyd over everything but EDGE and tru body designs.
Keep in mind.....set your goals and stick to them.
