I'm thinking about getting a 5150 for a backline studio amp. Anyone know which models are the best?

The transformers in the block letter version (EVH in black capital block letters rather than the signature) are generally better, so I'd go for that.
The 5150 II is pretty much the second best option, so it'd go Block letter 5150 > 5150 II > Original 5150 with signature.

I've had 1 in the studio for like 3 weeks and I am loving it. Records really nice w/ a tubescreamer in front. So I am thinking... it is time to buy one.....

the original 5150 is the highest gained one and has more of a metal voicing, but a decent sounding clean will be hard to get. The 5150II has a decent clean and a little bit more tame of a voicing. The new EVH 5150 I have never played but is supposed to have very decent cleans and of course more of a van halen voicing. They are all probably the loudest amps ever though, but not necessarily any of them are the heaviest amps out there. I like my XXX better myself, but really I wish I had waited till I could go to the guitar center in Atlanta and tried out some more brands. Compromise should be avoided when it comes to gear if at all possible I have decided.

I have a dual recto.... so I want a 5150 now. nice to have a solid backline. Some guys are really into exotic amps, but for the studio, I like tried and true. Something I know I can plug in and in 30 seconds have totally badass tone going thus saving the client time.
Word on the street seems get the original w/ block lettering

Peavey 5150 is the head im gonna get when i move to a larger place. Totally NO place for a stack at my room. It is a brutal amp for a reasonable price. Prices on exotic amps make baby jesus want to get on a cross sooner
