I am sick of my little Line6 practice amp, and my parents offered to get me anything in the area of $200 for Christmas (I feel bad, but eh. Good tone would be worth it). My temptation here is to get the Epiphone Valve Junior or a similar tiny tube half-stack and run a distortion through it. Is this a poor idea?

I like my crate palomino. Pretty much the only good amp from crate. If they make one in that area it would be very small though. I have the 1 12". I know there is a 10" and maybe an 8" check the friend of musicians for prices.

however if you running like a metalzone through a jazz to classic rock gained amp, you might like solid state better.

Yeah, I'm still flailing around. My other alternatives are as follows:
Rocktron Silver Dragon into <insert random cheap-ass loud-as-shit amp here, probably Peavey>
Behringer V-Amp into <anything at all>. I used to have one of these, and the distortion is pretty damn good, surprisingly. Only problem is that mine got flooded in a flood of flooding (I just got up, give me a break) and now does not work.
EDIT: Third option and right now the most alluring: Vox Valvetronix, which gets so much good shit talked about it here. They're also cheapish.

The V-Amp is a pretty cool unit.....bad thing is they like to quit working for no aparent reason. I know of 2 that have done this. =( As far as flood damage..... If you didnt power it up while it was still wet, it should still work when dried out completely. I would replace the the power suply though.

Basically, I live in a hollow/valley-type-dealie. New York State, near where NYC has its reservoirs (foothills of the Catskill mountains, Walton, Delaware River area). This area got hit really hard by a flood two summers ago, which was when much of my equipment of the time got so fucked. Surprisingly, my main axe was mostly okay, and the repairs to the guitar in question were cheap (see the thread about how long the guy took to get around to 'em, though). But my V-Amp stopped working well, which was balls. Eventually stopped working quietly altogether, regardless of how high I turned the noise gate, and the LEDs were all fucked too.
By the way, as a totally off-topic question, how much do noise gates hide mistakes? The V-Amp, which I'm pondering getting again, was noisy as shit without the noise gate turned on at least a little bit, but it does have:
A. Pretty good sound, not as digital as Line6 crap. B. Footswitch. C. It's a DI box, so I can use it for all sorts of crap.

Direct connection of instrumentes, eh? Seriously, though, I was asking because I don't want my mistakes hidden.

Then turn the threshold down, just so that the feedback is hidden and you will hear all your fuckups. I do this by rolling threshold up a lot, and then lowering it until i can barely hear feedback, and leave it there.

one of my friends was looking at getting either a little crate or peavy (can't remember which) class A 5W tube amp for about $120 i think. just get a DS-1 and a tubescreamer, and you'd be good to go

The thing to look for in valve amps is the # of preamp and power section sockets. The more ya have, the better the odds of it being modded to your liking. 4 12ax7s are better than 3... see the pattern? Even at 5 watts, a valve amp can sound mean as fuk.

I've never played on a silver dragon pedal, or really any pedal with a tube in it, but they are interesting. I have the 2X12 valvetronix. They are good for anything from jazz to rock, but nothing high gain whatsoever, they have very little punch.

Hmm. Well, that's good to know, thanks. Scratch the Valvetronix, in that case.

however the valvetronix xl's are supposed to be more high gain. I've never played one of them.
