Merry Christmas again people. So im going maybe to ask my parents a combo amp for the orthodox Christmas (dated 7 january). Thing is I am not going to gig in the next 5 years or so (school, no time for bands) but I will be recording my stuff, so Ill need something that would sound decently recorded. I am looking into 7-800 bucks price range but it is stretchable. So anyway, I would like to get some heavy sound out of the combo (really like that guitar sound here: youtube.com/watch?v=8L-rIqlCH1Q around 1:30) and also like old CoB sound with heavy leads. Oh and some mellow cleans Also I am not looking for 10058943 Terawatts of power since I am not going to gig it, so around 50 W. I am looking into following brands: Mesa, Peavey, mb vox / randall / marshall. There is no ENGL dealer here so I canĀ“t try them out before I buy. Hit me with any amps you guys like, Ill go and try them out ;D Thanks

Second the 5150. JSX combo is dos too if you have the right pups
mesa combos are good too but pricey...
i'd stay away from solid state stuff, and marshall (they're good, but not for what you're lookin' for)

Well there is the valvekings for the cheaper stuff, and there are XXX combos, as well as used stuff like Peavey Ultra's. Pretty much peavey is the way to go for affordable brutality.

True, they,re classics for a reason. Torkin, there's two way you could think for your amp. 1. get a fairly cheap one (in your price range) and change it in a few years. 2. get an expensive one, which you won't change, but be broke (ye'd have to borrow money from the bank or something)

Yea I am inclining towards no.1, though I can afford an expensive amp. The prob is that if I buy the exact mega amp I want, I won't be able to use it even to 5% of its capabilities, more to say most hiend amps do not sound good at those levels. You see I live in a very small apartment in a big block, and everywhere around me I see ignorant about good technical music people crawling. I would just be kindof better off with a cheapo line6 junkbox than a ENGL beast. Tube amps are really loud for bedroom levels. That's a big contradiction for me so I don't rly know what to do.

How about a lil Squire/champ15 with a decent lil preamp in front of it? Theyre plenty loud but lack tone. Even a newer TS9 (tube screamer)would bring life to those lil amps. Prolly cost ya 200-250 for it all. 1 of my all time fave amps is the late 80s Peavey Studio Pro 112. This amp had everything. The new ones suck major ass though.

Thats an idea... So I have a speaker right now, if I get a good tube pre but some ss lower end power amp.. Would that be a good idea tone wise?

As much as I like Yamaha guitars, I cant say the same of their amps. They all sound seriously dry to me. I suggested Fenders because theyre cheap and farily dependable...but you wont find a Princeton chorus for under $500 anywhere =( Nothing in the audio realm is cheap. Thus the term "poor musician" was born. Youre just going to have to trust your ears and save up a lil coin. Ive found some pretty cool stuff at garage sales to.. might try that.
