The thread on well-tempered guitars got me to thinking.
Now, I realize that fretless guitars kind of defeat the point of the guitar, which is to play full chords easily with various inversions. But have any of you played fretless guitars? If I decide that I want one badly enough (and I'm beginning to: I really hate the intonation problems that guitars have, and definitely can often hear them) I may just get a Warmoth neck and ask them to leave the frets off.
But my question is this: is it possible to play chords, power chords, and the like with a fretless? I realize I'd have to relearn a lot, but I think it might be worth it.

ouchh... I have a fletless yamaha bass (my ex-bassplayer de-freted it ) and hell.... playing chords is hard. think it's like a violin, you just move your finger a lil and pitch change...i struggle playing some easy-stuff (on pitch ;P)
TBH, if you're sick of bad intonations etc... get a custom guitar from a well known luthier. I think a fretless guitar could be cool in some situation, but after a while it'd be annoying imo.
Btw, if they dont put up the frets, your wont have any visual thingy to know which note it is..
but If you decide to get a fretless, then good job:P

You probably know that if you play a fretless guitar then you are:
1) A badass jazz player, or 2) Gay
So if you get yourself one, make sure you learn some jazz

See. Now, it would really be wrong if you bought yourself a fretless.

I used to own one, i had it tuned in 5ths, too. it was pretty fun, but it wasn't a quality guitar so i never got around to playing it too much. tuning GDAEBF# was awesome though.
