I have realized recently that I probably won't be totally happy with what I'm doing, unless it involves playing. I've looked at numerous music oriented careers, trying to find one thats more "secure"... and I've realized that there are no truly secure jobs. Not just in music, but anywhere.
I looked at shelling out the cash for schools for recording, managing, etc. but I don't think it's worth the money. It's not like being a doctor, where you have to get a degree. Besides... its not really what I want to do.
I just want to be able to play music for a living, even if its a crappy living. My main problem, though, is finding people to play with who have a similar goal, in a similar style. I'm in the process of writing an album, but I want a band, and everyone I meet either doesn't possess the skill, or understanding, or they are in it "just for fun" with good chops and potential. Either they want to be super rich and famous, or they want to have music as a hobby. The fact that they need to be able to devote 100% effort to music, at any cost, with no promise of anything, doesn't help. I'd be willing to drop all ties, starve, and be homeless, if that's what it took. I don't need quite that level of devotion from others, but I want people able to throw all caution to the wind and just go.
I've been thinking about moving to a bigger center for music, like Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. I've even debated going to Europe to stay with my uncle and find a band. It's a lot of money to relocate, though, which is why I haven't done it yet. If I found the right people, I'd move anywhere in the world, but I don't know how to find the "right" people. I've tried all the classified ads all over the net and locally... nothing definitive.
I'd settle for being a roadie of any kind, or a tech... mostly as a means to get connections, but it'd be fun.
I'll end my rambling/rant/philosophizing/wondering ;D :
Basically, I need to know how to find people, and get started on this path. Any other advice based on the above random musing would be cool too.
