I gave up trying to write any band music and wasted a couple hours recording a southern metal song. I even signed back up for the forum so I don't have to post as a guest anymore. Now your job is to let me know what you think! =) www.thiswaytoneverland.com/tracks/Southernmetal.mp3The guitars are just my Jackson through my guitarport, into Cubase. The bass guitar is my same Jackson, with a pitch shift filter (-1 octave) and then re-amped. The drums are tracked (Drumkit From Hell 2) and the overheads have a little bit of room-verb. The solo is improv, the last thing I added, but I think it sounds ok, even though it's the same tone as the rhythms with a touch more gain. EQ and various compressions on every track (except the solo, which is raw) and I added a touch of EQ, compression, and a hard-limiter for mastering (I was too lazy to master everything seriously, so I just compressed and limited to keep everything just under 0dB.) That's pretty much it! -Steve

Damn, that's a good sound for Line6. Fuckin' solid-state shite gets better every day -- I have a recording teacher who thinks that tube amps will eventually disappear because of 'em.
Good stuff, I like it, even though I'm not normally into that sort of stuff.

Thanks man!
Yeah, there's a hell of a lot of tricks I've learned over the years to getting a good sound from a Line6 modeler like guitarport.
Plenty of mids in pretty much any tone (scoop in EQ after recording if you have to scoop), very low gain (this song was about 25% gain, the rhythm sound by itself is so low distortion that it's no more than blues crunch). Other than that, overdub the guitar like a motherfucker and cut the low muddy frequencies and the high "modeling amp hiss" frequencies. It sounds pretty good if you do all of that and play pretty tightly.
The other thing I've learned is to sit away from any electronic equipment, and turn off the monitor before I hit record, because 90% of the buzz from guitarport is the computer monitor interfering through the pickups and the guitarport itself. The monitor hiss kills a few important frequencies that you need for rhythm guitar, so I turn off the monitor and hit record on the keyboard every take.
That's all I know. It doesn't sound nearly as good as my B-52 but it's a hell of a lot easier than miking up an amp.

Hell yeah. Listening to Southern metal makes American beer or whisky seem more appealing.
