Hi guys. More noob questions for me. I am planning on recording some shizzles, and I've just realized how much of a nothing I know about recording. Im gonna record digital to my computer, and what I have now is : guitar, amp, mic stand, sm57, and recording software. What I can't find a decent answer to is : what is supposed to be between sm57 and recording software. Mixers, preamps help ...

sound source > mic > mic preamp (they have these on mixers) > digital converter > recording software
There are a lot of solutions that offer a mic pre and converter in 1 package.
The mic pre amplifys the mic signal to a resonable level. The converter takes the analogue signal and converts it to digital so that the pc can understand it.
Does that help?

Yea thanks Joel. Could you recommend a preamp and a converter that wouldn't cost too much but would do the trick, im not looking for pro stuff yet, just something to get some chops recorded.

OK I think I'll go with line6 toneport ux1, it looks appealing. I hear though that it may need usb 2.0, for that I need to install xp SP2, and it somewhy doesn't want to install on my PC. Will do some research on it, thanks again!

Yeah I was thinking about a firewire interface, but I don't have a FW port in my PC, and my new laptop could be months away. I got a Mackie XD-2 Spike for a decent price (decent price for Iceland *cough*, shit is so expensive here...), and I'm pretty happy with dat

Well a regular usb port is better than a toneport for micing stuff I think, but firewire is superior when it comes to do more than one track simultaneously.
