When am I gonna register my account again so I don't have to post as a guest? I dunno, anyway.
My friends in 7th Son worked with Suecof on their demos. If you haven't checked them out find them on myspace, they're fantastic.
They said he's fantastic at what he does, and he really knows how to take a song and fuck with it until it's great, but he does have his own preferences for how a song should be, and you should definitely expect to butt heads with him unless you can show him without a doubt that your way is the best way.
He's prolly gonna want to say "Let's put this like this, and this like this, and change that, and I want this here..." and he's gonna wanna make it just the way he wants it, in his style, which is probably a good thing for a producer to do considering he's had so much experience in the industry and such, but he's recording and mixing you, not really producing you as such, so don't let him think you're some new band that doesn't know what they're talking about.
If you know that the way you want it done is the right way, don't settle for any less, even if he gets pissed off, haha.
That's just my warning, because some of the few times they've worked with him, they've had to be pretty insistent (to say the least) about what they wanted to get it.
=)

Fuck producers, the best thing is to have an audio engeneer in the band, so you dont have any problems ;p
BTW Suecof's playing in CAPHARNAUM with dan mongrain of Martyr is KILLER (i just hate the vocals!!!!)

Fuck producers, the best thing is to have an audio engeneer in the band, so you dont have any problems ;p Producers are hired because 999 of every 1000 bands have no idea what is required to actually sell records and go national. Most people have no idea how to actually arrange a song neitherless write must that people actually like or will spend money on. It is what it is. The statisitcs speak for themselves. You hire a producer to know better than you, just like you hire someone like Andy Wallace to mix your record because he knows how to mix better than you. Producers serve a purpose, just like song writers do. Arguing with someone who probably knows a lot more than you and is way more sucessful than you is usually not a strategy to go somewhere. Just my 2 cents. ;D

For mixing/audio stuff, I DO agree, you need someone with tons of experience.
To write "popular " songs you might need someone, as it's hard as fuck to write catchy-as-hell stuff.
but for underground metal, i find it pointless... the whole idea is to do something new. And IMHO, if you don't know how to write songs (riffs and arrangement)... they why are you recording this stuff? I mean... You gotta know what you do, and be confident that "this song is the best it can get" before anything.. just my two cents. Besides, you KNOW that all producer do sounds the same.
I dont think bands (most are death/extreme metal icons) like Spawn of Possession,Suffocation Cephalic Carnage, Martyr, Augury, Neuraxis, Spiral Architect, Origin, Psycroptic, Arcturus, Borknagar, Emperor, Winds, Gorguts, Demilich, Morbid Angel, had anyone to touch their compositions.
However, Kreator turned shit when they let the producer in. Megadeth past 90 too. 'tallica (past AJFA) , Nile (new album is boring as hell). Maiden. After a while their music sound generic as hell. Atheist had a contract for a 3rd album, which turned out to be composed/recorded in like 46 days because the producer was pissed, didnt turn out that bad, but its not a good album either..
(producer+lack of idea + contract to make another album = not a good mix)

Beside... music is ART. you can get help, you can get tips or ask ppl what they think about.. but you dont let 'em do it for you. IMO, if you cant play & write you can't make music. Sad but True. too much ppl want to be famous or popular, when they dont have the "talent" or skills if you prefer
Hell, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozard, Chopin etc didnt need anyone to compose brilliant stuff. if they wouldnt've be good, then they would be forgoten yet.
Btw, a painter can ask someone if his stuff is nice.. but nobody is gonna draw anythingfor him.
