To be honest my favorite guitar tone is Hendrix's from Castles Made of Sand. So glassy. As for hi-gain shits, I would go for Yngwie's tone on I am a Viking for lead and Children of Bodom's cover of She is Beautiful for rhythm.

I must say that my two favorite tones in general would be those of Brett Garsed and George Lynch as far as lead goes.

No secret that I'm a fan of George. Honestly though..... the break after the lead on Winger's "Hungry" always amazed me for some reason. REB has always impressed the hell out of me with shit he comes up with.

YES MAN !!!! On the latest tour, Shaffer's tone was INSANE. Soo thick and powerful, very defined, and not too much overdrive (just enough to get a DOS bite) Troy Stelle tone was nice too, he's an awesome player... he's maybe slightly better than Shawver and Tarnowski (althought they wrote awesome solos)
The drums was TIGHT AS HELL, Brent Smedley is one of best drummer in the american heavy metal scene (along with the other guys who played recently in the band)

for me it depends on the song and what you're trying to convey... that being said, I'm a sucker for Clapton, particularly Layla, and this solo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY04yo0C0fI

Gonna add some more old school tones.
SODOM - AGENT ORANGE (1989) What a KILLER rythm tone. Kreator - Coma of Souls (1990) A bit looser, but it's still very crrrrrrrrushing.
