Sorry, dude, I just get pissed off when people keep asking me to tab something out that I'm describing to them in really simple, easy-to-use terminology.
Maybe I should write up an article for this, maybe even a masterclass -- the old theory masterclass is a bit outdated.

Everyone is at different levels of music theory in this board...keep in mind. Some may be still learning it. It's a guitar message board for learning. Also others may not use theory, that is their choice. Just as it is a choice to learn music theory. Their are players that are great either way. No need to get pissed off.

But at the same time, it's a bad idea to talk about technicality when you don't know what technicality means, and don't realize what has already been done. There's nothing left to do that's original, as far as harmony and note choice goes. Check out Schoenberg for some crazy atonal shit that sounds like SoP on a piano. But please keep in mind that I'm not trying to dis anyone or call you names -- most of you can probably play circles around me (especially now). But the theory thing is different. Here: ibreathemusic.com/article/157P.S.: Eddie was a classical pianist as a child.

I noticed this when I started learning theory. It suddenly hit me that all these guys saying theory "ruined their creativity", was just theory showing them how much they sucked.
Song one is E-A-B, song two is A-D-E, song three is G-C-D... "awesome I've got three unique songs!!" With theory the same three songs are shown to be the same thing over and over and over again..."theory ruined my creativity!!"
I paint, and I view music like painting. I know what colors to mix to get certain effects, and how to utilize visual space. It makes sense to know what notes to mix and how to get a certain result.
If you don't know color theory, you could spend all day mixing colors randomly until you get "pretty close". With a good knowledge of color theory it takes no time at all to zero in on the exact combination you need. Music is no different.
I can make something evoke certain moods at will just by knowing how color works... I am striving to do the same with sound.
It'd be great if you wrote an article...I've been looking for more composing/advanced theory stuff. I'm gonna buy some books when I get some more cash (they're all like 150 bucks). It's not worth going to school for me. I don't learn well like that, and it's too expensive... better to drop 500-600 bucks on books.
I think Ed sounds more wank than the 'Truch to be honest. It's all blues/pentatonic played fast. I like some of it, but it doesn't move like some of Petruccis stuff. It doesn't express anything. Not all of Petrucci's stuff does either, but none of Ed's does IMO. I think he gets to much credit...fast playing and tapping already existed. He just popularized it.

Petrucci is a total wanker. Rusty Cooley FTW. Also, I could write an article on secondary chords or something, but I'm not much of a composer, so really fancy stuff I don't do that well (although I'd like to).

I don't get into the whole comparing guitarists thing, especially when you're talking about such technically skilled players. I will say that Petrucci's writing has gone downhill recently IMO (to borrow a term from mike, "chromatic wankery" ), but I'm more drawn to melodic soloing with instances of shred as opposed to Rusty Cooley style sweep picked giberish (not that i don't like it). petrucci made me want to get better. period. he's honestly the first guitarist that made me freak out when i listned to Stream of Consciousness the first time. cooley made me want to sweep pick, and that's about all i've gotten from watching vids of him and listening to what few of his solo things i've had. i didn't even know what sweeping was until a while after i saw this vid... www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzuXyXQ0IHoand was like "i want to do THAT!" And i think that rusty's stuff with Outworld totally rapes his solo project stuff when compared.

I agree on the Outworld record. It has a giant guitar neck up the ass of Cooley's solo stuff. But have you heard the solo from "The Never?" I really don't see where you get this "Cooley only sweeps" thing from. He can do basically everything well, short of eight-finger tapping, and I've seen him do some of that too on YouTube.
