So I'm pretty set on picking up a six string bass (yes my hands are more than large enough to make it my bitch), so can anyone point me in the direction of Insane Bassguitar.com or educate my ass on the spot? I mostly need amp tips (as in what the hell is a good bass amp for a reasonable price, should I go tube or solid state, does it matter on a bass, and does anyone know of any bands that aren't Tarot or Primus that have kickass bass players? (I'm discluding funk because although I do listen to that shit, I want to play metal.)

as far as amps go, i'm not sure what the price would be on one if you'd find it, but a friend of mine plays through a Trace Elliot 2x10 combo with an additional 2x10 cab...it sounds pretty disgusting...late 80's/early 90's gear i'm pretty sure. you'd probably have to ebay for it though. i know it's a good amp, but other than that the only bass amp i know of is the ampeg SVT, which is $$$$$$$
and as far a pwning bass players go - David Lee Roth (Billy Sheehan on bass, ftw), Mr. Big (Billy Sheehan, again), Symphony X (especially the stuff from Divine Wings of Tragedy), John Myung from Dream Theater is good too.

I may not be a bass player, but I have recorded quite a few of them.
My personal favorite amp manufacturer is Ampeg. The 2 best damn sounding basses I've heard in the studio for rock/metal stuff: 1) Musicman Stingray 2) Sandberg J series
I've seen some pretty nice Warwicks and the like in, but nothing imo that I've ever recorded has even come close in tone to those 2. That Musicman sounded freaking huge. It was like Chevelle bass the second I plugged it into the board.
