Well, 2 months ago or so I ordered a second KxK SII-7 custom shop 7 string.. i love the first one and got a great deal on another! this one will have a maple board, black stained satin finish body, mahogany/maple neckthru, and bareknuckle warpig ceramic / nailbomb pickups! \m/ Ooh, and in Sept/Oct or so something with one more string than THAT may be forthcoming, but I'm not going into details just yet With Stef's Liberatore 7 string V on order, to name but one, we have quite the extended range guitar community going on here \m/

a friend of mine just got the ESP Stephen Carpenter Signature 7 string this past week (fyi mike...that middle pickup slays even thought it looks retarded). It plays amazing and looks sharp, so i'm thinking of going for one if i can get the job at the airport i'm going for.
now, IMO, 8 strings is just a little too much, for me at least :\

I played my friend's custom 8 strings quite a few times, and tbh, the lowest string isn't usable in a riffing context.... you mostly have to play two hand tapping or clean, to mess up in bass' range.
BTW, when I get my hand on my guitar, I might be allowed to join 7string.com hahaha ;p

This is why a high A string with fanned frets is true. \m/

but then, the high A would be what, a 10, or 9... that's way too small...

piano strings \m/
(Used to know a bassist, his lowest string was a piano string and it was tuned to something like F# )

Warwick makes the Dark Lord Bass, tuned F# B E A.... needs at least 1000 watts amp and good speaker coverage to really use the F# apparently.
When I get some money, I think I'll go for one of those ESP 8's...probably the standard scale one. Tuned to up to 'A'. F# is too low for riffing.... I play a lot of doom, so it might work, but 'A' or maybe a little lower would be far better, and I still wouldn't use it for fast riffing...Nile barely holds on to clarity with 'A' tuning.
You could get rid of your bassist, actually. The low F# is the third lowest note a standard bass can play. They'd have to tune down/buy a warwick, and drop serious cash on amps to keep up. Pizza delivery ain't gonna cut it, I'm afraid ;D
Halo makes up to 10 string guitars for a really good price, but I've read mixed reviews. 3/4 of the reviews say "10/10 best guitar I've ever played, etc, etc, etc." 1/4 say "1/10 my $50 plywood pawnshop special slays it horribly..."
