My guitar with the trem is only 2 yrs old, and it's an original Floyd, so I haven't had any specific problems with wear. But from what I've been told, the knife edges can wear down and if things get corroded, the tuning will be shot to hell. I assume it would affect things like fluttering, too.

Does age/wear effect it much? cause i buy a lot of second hand things online. Not really for the trem itself, unless the knife edges are worn out. but you can wear a spring to where its not as snappy and It's all about the spring tension, and elasticity of the spring that lets them be flutter friendly. First Drop down to 3 springs,,,then go and buy about 10 or 15 springs,as every spring is gonna vary just a little in springiness so you'll have to play around with grouping them, but the more you have the better. Get long and short ones also,,,but pay attn. to them as to not mix the two, as you will always have tuning issues. then play with installing them strait and the outer 2 angled in. i personally angle the outer 2 so as the springs are never at rest and always semi open as this keeps them under load and in flux. YMMV. I tend to do allot of fluttering in my playing, and change springs about every 8 mo. or so but i have my set up to be REAL sensitive to where i can get little flutters pulling off and hammering a certain way(just a feel thing really) without using the bar. Here is a prime example of this, from the song i just finished mixing a couple weeks ago . onlinerock.com/musicians/moshwitz//break_solo.mp3there are finger and bar flutters through out and push/pull bar flutters at the end.
