Yo metal guys.... I'm thinking about doing some badass metal jam tracks w/ totally slamming production. What criteria would you consider that would make a perfect jam track? For example, what length, how many (if any) key changes, how many riffs, what kid of arrangement, etc........ What I mean is if you could have a PERFECT collection of metal/rock jam tracks, what would it be comprised of? Personally I've always wanted to see: 1) riffs that don't suck 2) production that doesn't suck. nothing is more gay than DI guitars and lame drum machine sounds. 3) a legitimate length of song like 5-10 minutes 4) something that doesn't follow a 12 bar blues format So please weigh in!!!

Do you mean a lot of key changes in each song, or maybe like 2 songs in every possible key? Which would be better?

I think it'd be better if there were both. Like a jam track in every possible key and then one or a few that switch in song. That or you could give us the recordings and we could mix 'em to our liking or something like that.

For guitar, I'd give him BKPs and german amps tho ;p Do at least one in every key, then some with a few changes. Hell, if we can make one with EVERY key, and odd time signature, that would be badass ;p

Thx for the ideas. KEEP EM COMIN!!!!
do you guys think it would be best to arrange a jam track just as like 1 or 2 riffs repeating, or make it into like simple song form like intro, a b c a b c bridge..... repeating several times.... end???

For guitar, I'd give him BKPs and german amps tho ;p I'm looking forward to the day a band brings something like that in so I can record it and post it in our guitar thread. Like half the bands I get have peavey valvekings. Everytime I get a cool new head I record it. My only house amp is a dual recto and a crappy marshall valvestate.

I'm gonna start putting together a piss load of jam tracks tomorrow. After I do a bunch of metal ones, I'm going to do a bunch of rock ones.

I like the song forms better. Repeating riffs turn into pentatonic ripping fests; I'd rather have something that I could shred to, but that opens up at times and leaves tons of room to experiment with melodies and such.

That is what I think I am leaning towards. I want to do a whole piss load of metal styles, like every possible key, and have a few tracks of 12 key modulation. Most songs will be written like songs. There will porbably be some actual repeatable jams I think too.
