s189.photobucket.com/albums/z182/ilikemuffinsalot/new%20guitar/Guitar plays pretty damn nice -- 10-52s in DGCFAD tuning. The HZ pickup sucks, but I'm going to get that fixed. Only problem is the awful neck dive, but I have a few inches from the strap button to the jack, so I may try to fix that myself. Other than that, this thing fucking rules.

Not quite. The most supreme is the Caparison Orbit. But this one plays pretty nice, for what I paid for it.

I need to put 10-46s back on it, because while, as far as I can tell, the neck is perfectly straight, the bass strings, especially that low D, have been buzzing like motherfuckers. I'm guessing it's because of the .006" difference between the .046 and the .052. We'll see if that turns the trick.

+3 for V's.
Played one at the store...'twas nice, but I already have an LTD DV8, so I couldn't justify buying it.

I'm guessing it's because of the .006" difference between the .046 and the .052. We'll see if that turns the trick. A thicker string will actually pull your neck (bow it forward slightly) Kinda sounds hokey to me. Fret clearance should not be an issue. If you really want that .52 on it..... take it to a tech and have him shim the nut .030- .070". The easy fix is a truss rod adjustment. I personally don't like fucking with the rod unless the neck actually has a twist in it. See what your local tech says and get back to me.

I already went down to 10-46 and screwed around (literally) with the truss rod and trem. Going to take it to a tech anyway, although it's definitely a lot better now.

I have a question for you folks.
The way this tech set it up (a quick set-up, no intonation or real truss-rod work besides some basic stuff), the action is really low, but it doesn't sing as much as it does higher. Is this normal? With the action this low it's easy to play, but doesn't have as much sustain as I'd like (but it's not buzzing much, either).

Unfortunately....yes. Thats normal. Your best bet is to learn to do setups yourself to find what you like. Paying someone to do a setup every week gets old and expensive. General rule of thumb......... High action has killer tone but is harder to play: Low action is super easy to play but lacks in supreme/desired tone. The trick is to find the balance you like and keep it there after every string change. Once the intonation is set for an instrument (other than 1 equipped with a Floating trem) it shouldn't change but 2 times a year with seasons (humidity changes as necks move with moisture in the air). If you have a set (neck thru) neck and a string thru (no trem) bridge..... makes shit a whole lot easier to maintain your tone with minimal BULLSHIT that goes with playing a wooden instrument. Tuning stability is the key. Every guitar is different, but once you find the sweet spot its easy to keep it. If I keep this up... I'll be out of a job

Heh. I have found that I am suddenly able to shred stuff that I simply couldn't play before with a higher action, BUT the tone isn't what it could be. I will keep fucking with it, and I am glad that shit is full of cock.
