hey im from canada and i might be taking a trip down to alabama in a couple months. i was thinking of picking up some new gear. i currently play a prs ce22 into a ine 6 spider 112 (the original). shitty amp, but large enough for my room. i plan on jamming, starting a new band this semester at school, and wuld consider myself an intermediate player. i was thinking of picking up a cheaper than here les paul, saving a couple hundred dollars where gear is way cheaper. whats the difference between the 50's and 60's neck (i think one is slim and the other fat) in terms of playability, sound, etc. also, i might use this money to buy a new tube amp half stack instead even though itll be way too big for my room because my amp right now sucks and i already have a pretty rad guitar, but i want the ability to play shows/ smaller venues soon. im not sure if its a good idea to pay for a cmbo smaller tube amp cause itll be small, and i dont really want to pay for 2 new amps if this wasnt isnt big enough or doesnt look big and bad ass enough . plus combo tube amps look really expensive. ive looked at mesa, peavey, krank, and some others. i want whatever amp i get to be nice enough i can have it for a long while. could someone give me some recommendations of amps to look at or even some guitars (although im pretty sure i wanted a les paul, ive always wanted one... thanks for reading this jumbled stream of thought, i appreciate your help

I assume you play heavy music, if not, disregard this message.
Probably THE best cheaper solution for a tube half stack would be a used (or new) peavey 5150 or peavey 6505 head with an avatar or even vader cabinet if you can find one. Or engl/mesa cab (more expensive). But I think that many people would say that you cant beat 5150 or 6505 for the buck (basically 6505 is a reissue of 5150).

cool, i took a look at the 6505 and it looks pretty sweet. ill have to try it out (along with a bunch of other shit) at the guitar store. i do like heavy shit, but im not into scremy/throaty stuff (except maybe a little lamb of god or CoB). im also really into blues rock stuff a la aerosmith guns n roses led zeppelin, rolling stones, etc.... so i also want a little versatility. i really like slash's sound.
someone else has to have some ideas?

Sup? :-)
Well,, I currently live in north alabama(hell)...LOL what part are you going to?
and i would agree with Torkin on the 5150/6505 bang for the buck,,,you might look at the Carvin V3 also,,I've heard some good reviews out of some reliable sources,,,or maybe some kind of rack/power amp/2x12 rig.

Yeah about racks. I have seen an engl rack going used here for less than a grand. I dont remember what exact configuration it had, I think it was an engl e530 preamp with a engl power amp I dont remember. Also that reminds me of another very popular amp, engl powerball. Sadly I have never played it myself, but judging from the reviews its really good for the buck:

I dont know the neck difference, I just know that the 500T pickup is a classic hehe (but BKP...)
The "huge" tone is mostly due to very heavy weight.
Anyway, just try 'em all 'till you get the right one (custom, studio, standard etc)

Any gibson made in the 50s and 60s is so far out of anyones price range.. its not funny...at all. OVERPRICED. My 61 Epiphone has a gibson neck on it and its way thin. Ive never seen a gibby neck you could call a "tree trunk" but there are thickness variations over the years.
Just have to find 1 you like.

The faded series Pauls and SGs absolutely have tree trunk necks on them. They're insane.

Each hand wraps around the neck differently, so as you can imagine people with larger hands might do better with a thicker neck and smaller hands with a smaller neck. The difference is very apparent when doing larger sweeps or multi string scale runs.

60's is slimer I think 50 would be baseball bat big.
Tone would be similar, it's the same maple, unless the wood is cracked or something. Keep in mind that it's mostly the pups which affect the amplified tone.
Anyway, you can have the neck sanded-down if you want something slimmer (get it professionaly done)
