Yups, sad but true. Don't like 90% of the vocalists have to be autotuned? i don't have a problem with people needing a good tweaking on their pitch, provided they can sing their parts properly for the most part...anything can cause pitch problems, even lack of sleep or sinus problems. that's why autotune exists IMO - to tweak away those minor flats/sharps to create a near-flawless finished product. what gets on my nerves is that it's such a fad, especially in R&B which used to have some of the most beastly singers of all time, that any talentless hack who can figure out how to put a beat together in fruity loops can have a recording career as long as they can write decent (and i use the word "decent" very very loosely) poetry, talk into a microphone (that Autotune the News thing proves that much) and just slap a hard autotune on it and sell records. the only time I think using that much autotune on vocals is okay is in the context of techno/electronica or if you want it as a special effect in a song (not as the entire basis of your vocals). </rant> but, as far as that vid goes, i think it's genius XD. those people that do those vids are actually in a band together, and they're pretty good.

Probably >99% of vocalists are autotuned. Even if someone comes into the studio and refuses... let me tell you about what happens on lunch break. mwhahaha
AT is generally used to average out a vocalists pitch and can be extremely transparent. Example, dude hits a killer take, has amazing phrasing and timing, but that last note just starts a bit sharp then comes back down.... hello auto tune. Fixed. No one will ever know. I autotune everyone, no matter how good or bad. Out of tune vocals suck. What varies is the amount of tuning. I always try to leave all natural inflections in the voice. It should never be used as a crutch, but more of polish. On the other extreme is the T paine / lil wayne thing where everything sounds like computerized. I've always like the effect. It can be pretty cool imo depending on what genre you are in. Like anything, over use gets boring.
AT gets a bad rap, but........ using autotune is no different than punching in a mistake on a guitar part or editing a snare hit the drummer flubbed like a pussy. If a guitarist is allowed to fix all his mistakes, then why shouldn't a singer be able to clean up his performance?

well, that's what i'm saying. it's good to polish the vocals off with it...i actually think it's pretty genius. but when the staple of your sound is the fact that you're "the guy who autotunes his voice a lot", then it's going a little too far.

Shit doesn't bother me, and it doesn't really hurt anything else. If you don't want to use it, don't, if you do, do. It's kind of like effects pedals. Sure that wah will sound really awesome, but you might be using it to cover up your mistakes, either way it doesn't effect the way you write music, or the music you like at all. That video is brilliant though.
