Anyone got tips on getting a really tight metal bass tone? I'm going to be recording some bass guitar for my side band and want to get a really good tone, with a little overdrive. I will probably attempt to do this direct without mic'ing a bass cab.

EBS valvedrive pedal, my bassist has that it's sweeet! it's very clean, but you can add a nice crunch if you want.
otherwise... tight strings, good pickups and preamp?

Avalon VT-737 preamp. Of course, unless you have $2300 to throw down for it, this information is useless seriously though - Trace Elliot bass amps have GREAT tone, and they have an XLR direct-out, so if you could find a head on ebay or craigs list you could run that pedal Stef was talkin about through it and use the direct out.

Cory, did you have any luck with your recordings?
