Am I the only one here who think it's WAY and way harder to have rythmic skills tight like Borat's sister than just shreddin' plain fast ??
it's fucking easy (for me) to just move my fingers fast on a freaking fretboard, i just dont feel the beats.... not only when i play (metronome, i know...im the first one to tell bout it...) but even when im listening to something :/
this issues piss me off...

especially when you get into polymetric stuff... yeah.
that is one thing that having had formal musical instruction helps with though...

Ive been trying to learn some king crimson stuff lately and its almost impossible, like you say not because of the speed but because of the rythms, but im starting to get the hang of polyrythms and stuff now. If you want to improve your rhythm forget about shred for a few weeks and learn some funk and prog stuff

...and learn some funk and prog stuff AMEN! I've got's the funk. No problems with polyrythms and fucked up timing here but that's ONLY because of practicing groove skills and playing with odd-timing on the metronome (like 9tuplets, 11's 13's and 15's). Like all white men I was born stripped of all timing, rythm and dance skills. But I got bored by the 1-2-3-4 and 1-2-3-4-5-6 a while back and started experimenting and found out: The dosest way to practice 6-string arpeggios is to play them in 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 or 15 notes per click. It's so fucked up one has to love it

I like the simplicity in music, rythm wise ;D. But maybe that will evolve someday. Today I don't get many prog bands like dream theater, although I worship petrucci's technique and I dig Evergrey a lot. But overall prog is not my cup of tea.

If you want to improve your rhythm forget about shred for a few weeks and learn some funk and prog stuff if you can nail King Crimson then you can call yourself a musician, that being said funk and prog require totally different feel and approach... funk is all about the groove and the feel is similar when you are making love to a hot women. Crimson is more mathematical, Bill Bruford is not a human (has played in all the greats... Crimson, Yes, Genesis etc.) the key to nail that shit is just playing a lot until your instincts are so strong that you just know when to change the rhythms

rhythm is very important IMO, I'm all about the groove, I grew up in north europe where people can't groove to save their lives.. all stupid straight 4th or 8th or 16th note feel crap.... I'm glad that I listened to a lot of Motown records
