I'm working on Paganini's 24th Caprice, and having a hard time with the sweeps in the second section. So here's my question: how do you finger the bits on the fourth and third strings in the minor sweep here: insaneguitar.com/mc/MCPIX/sweeping12.GIF ? Do you bar with your ring, or switch fingers like amazing six-string demigods? (Bastards. )

Also, while I'm bitching, are my hands just too freakin' small? I'm having a seriously hard time reaching the sixth string beyond the twelfth string, even when my guitar's almost around my neck (it doesn't seem to make much difference after a certain point). But my chops have finally started to reach shred-level within three days after a year's hiatus. I guess you really can practice without your instrument handy.

I'd roll my 3rd finger on the 3rd and 4th string in the minor one (14-14). It's much easier than using 2nd and 3rd and not rolling. I don't fully comprehend this: "reaching the sixth string beyond the twelfth string" But it's a good things your chops are coming round. It seems you practise for along time with no results and than one day it just clicks .. BAM! you're a sweep-demon from the fiery pits of hell-ah!

No, I mean my alt-picking is (slowly!) coming together. I can nail most of the basic stuff from Silent Night, Bodom Night without any trouble now (except for the leads, of course). My sweeping is still shit-ass-fuck. Thanks for the tip, I'lll keep that in mind. I'm trying to pace myself so that I don't destroy my hands and brain with too much practicing before I've conditioned myself to it again. What I mean is that above the twelfth fret (that is, closer to the body than the twelfth fret), I have a hard time reaching the sixth string. I.e., for two-octave runs in the upper half of the fretboard. By the way, strangely enough my picking started to get better once I threw away good technique and the metronome, and now I've made a jump (and am still clean). I could even post sound to prove it.

I roll my finger as well. Also if you can't do the roll thingy on 2nd sweep properly, then there is an alternate handling for that sweep, with the last note tapped. It is ----------------9-12-17-12- ------------10---------------- ---------9-------------------- -----11---------------------- -12-------------------------- ------------------------------ IMO its hell lot more fun that way That is also the handling that alexi uses for that sweep. -Silent night is \m/

seems the boys have got the roll thing covered... as for hitting the sixth string above the 12th fret.. make sure that thumb is resting about half way down the back of the neck.. gotta lose that baseball bat grip (thumb peeping over the top side of the neck)

Alright. I have one more question for you guys. This one is far more serious than the others, as it threatens the very metal in my core.
I am going bald at age 20.
I kid you not, my hairline's starting to recede. What is the truest way of dealing with this? My current plan is a pirate hat, since shaving one's head is too Satch (and they might confuse me with him if I do -- I'm just that good).
Also, pirates are truer than ninjas. ;D

Btw, you're rite: Ninjas are false, Pirates are powerdos.

Yes, but white hair != baldness most of the time. And my hair is not white, I'm balding, which is false unless you're Satch.

No. But pirate hats are. Okay, looks like I'm turning into a fucking старшик. I'm going bald and feel like I'm getting arthritis in the fingers of my left hand. What next, soft jazz and a cane?

Okay, two more fingering questions. For the 1-3-5-type sections of 3NPS scales, do you use your middle or ring finger for the 3? And for 1-3-4 do you use index-middle-ring or index-ring-pinky? I'm having a hard time using the latter, and always have (despite practicing it incessantly since it's "good technique").

I use both, it depends on what frets I am. Try doing index-middle-ring on frets 4-6-8 Many famous players use i-m-r on 1-3-4s and 1-3-5s, and there isn't anything wrong with it imo, although some classical players critisize it a lot.

I wish I could use i-m-r on 1-3-5s.
